The world's first fellowship-trained preventive neurologist. Dr. Niotis runs a private practice in New York City focused on early detection and personalized risk reduction for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and dementia with Lewy bodies, and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Neurodegenerative diseases don't begin when symptoms appear, and we have more opportunities to intervene than we once thought.

How they work with APOE4 patients

Dr. Niotis approaches prevention the way preventive cardiology approaches heart disease: no single pill prevents Alzheimer's, so the work is on the large share of risk that can be changed, fitted to the person in front of her. For APOE4 carriers that means starting from their own risk factors rather than blanket advice, because a genotype is one thing and what is happening in the body biologically may be a different story. Her practice tests blood biomarkers in a regimented way, running each one three times on several platforms, and she uses cholesterol balance testing to help predict who will respond better to a particular lipid-lowering therapy.

Dr. Kellyann Niotis is the world's first fellowship-trained preventive neurologist. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine, the Director of Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia Prevention Research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND), and runs a private preventive neurology practice in New York City focused on early detection and personalized risk-reduction strategies for diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Previously, Dr. Niotis led the preventive neurology program at Dr. Peter Attia's practice, Early Medical, and oversaw the nation's first Alzheimer's Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell/NewYork-Presbyterian, where she launched research initiatives in Parkinson's and Lewy body dementia prevention. Her research has been published in journals including Neurology, Aging & Disease, Alzheimer's & Dementia and the Journal of the Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease, and presented at national and international conferences.

Through her nonprofit research, she hopes to develop a clinical framework for Alzheimer's risk reduction that incorporates emerging blood-based biomarkers. She is writing her first book, Before It Begins, on the science of reducing risk for Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases and how to turn it into steps that protect the brain. Her expertise has been featured by CNN and NBC.
